I found this on Whedonesque... its kinda old, 2005. so I dont know how good it is... this guy made the real coat for the show...I dont know if he still does or not, but I thought I would pass the info on. He will make you a browncoat just like Mal's - which he certainly has experience with since he made all of the Firefly Mal coats - in sizes small, medium, or large. Custom sizes up or down are also available. The coats will, if available, include duplicates of the clasps which were cast for Firefly. Mr. Logan has researched and obtained leathers which will as closely match Mal's original browncoat as possible, just for the Firefly/Serenity community!
To get your Logan Browncoat, contact him for further information and pricing at:
Jonathan A. Logan - Custom Leathers 8336 Melrose Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90069 Phone: 800-472-5984 or 323-653-9155 Fax: 323-653-9730
Please reference this message when you contact him.
Clasps are not available for sale separate from the coat.
Source: direct interview with Jonathan A. Logan.
Prices which may be quoted for browncoats include:
Leather | Sizes | Price | Options deer skin | small, medium, large | $1,200.00 | +$100 for custom sizing up or down cow skin | small, medium, large | $800.00 | +$100 for custom sizing up or down lamb skin | small, medium, large | $600.00 | +$100 for custom sizing up or down
Clasps are not available for sale separate from the coat.
these prices are about 7 years old. so I am sure its more by now... prices are way out of my range, but maybe somebody out there can afford it..

Well first let me say that i am new to this site but have been a Firefly fan for a few years now. I looked around and finally got in contact with Johnath Logan last week. He talked with me for about 30 minutes straight when it was all said and done i found out that yes he is still making these jackets and that they run about $750. The time frame from start to finish all depends on the availability of the leather at the time of purchase. I would recommend checking his site out Try this link. stores.shopjonathanalogan.com/-strse-18/Browncoat/Detail.bok

I own the Abby Shot Browncoat. Sadly they do not manufacture it anymore. I've heard that the Jonathan Logan coats are really good. The only drawback that I've heard about the Logan coats is that he stamps his logo into the metal front of the clasps which I would not want. I like them to be plain just like the series. The Abby Shot Browncoat has screen accurate clasps, but Like I said, they're not manufacturing them any more. Of course I heard about the Logan stamp thing quite a while ago, so I'm not sure if that's true anymore.

I found out that yes he is still making these jackets and that they run about $750. The time frame from start to finish all depends on the availability of the leather at the time of purchase. For reference, my J. Logan reproduction Browncoat cost me a smidge over $1000, and took over a year to produce, but looks great and has no seam in the front panels. (It was hard for him to get a hide long enough) Also; PART of why my coat took so long was that when J. Logan was completing it, Nathan came in to the shop looking for a Browncoat for the Halloween episode of Castle; the coat first intended for me ended up on TV. I've heard that the Jonathan Logan coats are really good. The only drawback that I've heard about the Logan coats is that he stamps his logo into the metal front of the clasps which I would not want. I'm only a little annoyed by the logos. I believe strongly that his are the best currently available, even with the inaccuracies folk talk about. Logan uses quality material and I doubt many people go to his shop for personal fittings. They DO need to be tanned a bit darker, though.

That is so very cool... Did you specifically ask to have your coat made without the multiple panels on the front? the the coat first intended for me ended up on TV.

When I was talking to JL he said he is still putting his logo on the clasps. I really don't mind it and if it is a big eye sore I'm sure some mods can be done. LOL

So guys i am just curious, if money wasn't a big deal which Browncoat would you prefer to get, a Johnathan Logan one or an Abbyshot one? Well, as Abbyshot doesn't make theirs anymore, I'm thinking if you want a quality coat, you need to go with Logan. If I had the money, I'd get a Logan in addition to my Abbyshot.

well lets put it this way I have a line on an Abbyshot one and also a JL one. LOL I could spend the 750 on the JL one and get just that, or I could spend a little bit less than half of that and get the Abbyshot one and then commission someone to make me some custom boots with the money that I saved. LOL ... and since JL apparently doesn't use a solid panel on the front of the jacket any more it isn't as screen accurate.

I think if you request it, JL will use a solid panel. You may have to wait longer for your coat and pay a little more...
